This is especially harmful to female athletes who are trying to chase an aesthetic that is unrealistic and incompatible with high-level athletic performance.

Influencers across social media platforms are creating similar content on health and wellness, documenting everything a person eats in a day. For example, they typically highlight a very “clean” and organic diet (Pfender et al. 2026:1). However, these videos are not always authentic representations of what influencers go through to achieve such aesthetic physiques. Behind closed doors, influencers may be engaging in disordered eating behaviors, excessive exercise, and drug use in order to inhibit hunger cues or activate metabolic processes. Despite influencers selling a “better” lifestyle, in fact, such a lifestyle may be unhealthy and unattainable (Ewing 2025).

The Ideal Female Athlete

Female athletes today live in a world where being strong does not fit this skinny idealization on social media. This creates constant social pressures to chase lean physiques, even though athletes can perform at their highest level in bodies that do not have a six-pack. As scholars Wei and Scrivener (2025:5) explain: “Female athletes, especially those with muscular physiques, are caught in a gendered paradox: their athletic achievements often depend on traits culturally associated with masculinity, yet they remain subject to societal pressures to embody conventional standards of femininity.”

This stigma around female athleticism not only contributes to low self-esteem and poor body image in the real world, but also in online engagement (Pfender et al. 2026:2). With the rise of social media and the ability to profit from views, many female athletes share their lived experiences online as part of their jobs, or just for the love of their sport. However, the growing dependence on online visibility for sponsorships and personal branding heightens the pressure to be thin, as companies tend to support athletes who fit commercially appealing ideals of femininity. This promotes the idea that only some athletic physiques are worthy enough for “consumption,” and creates opportunity barriers for larger athletes (Wei and Scrivener 2025:5).

Athletes Need Calories

The overglorification of small, feminine physiques is harmful to athletes because it promotes extreme calorie restriction, dangerous weight-loss tactics, and the overarching idea that thinner is better for performance purposes. Being told that thinner is better confuses disordered eating with discipline or wellness, and can lead to the development of eating disorders, injury, and performance impairment in young athletes (Currie 2010:66). From a nutritional standpoint, extreme calorie restriction fails to provide the macro- and micro-nutrients needed not only for athletic performance, but for proper development, as adolescence and early adulthood are critical times for women to generate bone mass (Anderson 1996:1). Since females are more susceptible to osteopenia and osteoporosis later in life following menopause, it is crucial that they build enough bone mass early to establish a strong base before a lack of estrogen accelerates bone loss later (Clarke and Khosla 2010:2).

In the short and long term, following extreme diets without guidance can reduce quality of life. Many influencers push diets such as “low-carb”, “low-cal,” “fat-free,” often followed by “high-protein.” Following these types of restrictive diets can quickly lead to inadequate nutrient intake (Mateusz et al. 2026:39). Skipping critical macronutrients can also lead to brain fog and a decline in performance in other areas of life (Choi 2024). Carbohydrates are the body’s preferred energy source, and healthy fats aid in vitamin absorption and hormone regulation. Many female athletes do not have regular menstrual cycles due to a lack of proper nutrition, which can later lead to issues with fertility and overall hormone health, which is an important factor in athletic performance (Bytomski 2018).

Moving Forward: Redefining Health, Performance, and Representation

Ultimately, the prevalence of “Skinni-Tok” reveals the conflict between women’s appearance and performance, especially for female athletes. Wellness has become too much about aesthetics, distorting what real health is, while undermining the physical demands that female athletes face. In order to promote wellness for female athletes, digital spaces should highlight strength, nourishment, and functionality, rather than glorifying extreme thinness.

Athletes can regulate their social media consumption by being intentional about the content they engage with, choosing to follow accounts that promote performance, fueling, and bodily functionality over appearance. Setting boundaries around screentime and limiting exposure to triggering or appearance-focused content can also help reduce the internalization of negative body image.

Additionally, working with family members, coaches, or teammates to encourage awareness of toxic social media messaging can support female athletes in maintaining a healthier perspective on wellness. In doing so, the harmful ideals around being thin can be dismantled, and more spaces can be created where female athletes are supported in what their bodies are capable of achieving instead of how they look.
